Fraud and corruption can occur anywhere, and to any organization. In some environments the risks and implications of fraud investigations increases, and poor ethical behavior is rife. The requirement to understand the nature of fraud and corruption, how to lead, plan, manage or oversee an internal investigation, and the implications to business, operations and the reputation of the team can be critically important. When confronting a fraud event other unique factors [including security, legal and political risks] can also influence the approach adopted. Poorly managed fraud incidents can expose people, activities and the whole organization to significant legal, regulatory, client and reputational risk. It can undermine staff, group and stakeholder confidence, and result in significant costs and business disruptions, as well as a loss of business, or the ability to operate. Having an established and documented process to prevent, identify and respond to fraud and other criminal incidents demonstrates a mature, effective and compliant approach to risk management.
