Youth programs offer an opportunity to shape the knowledge and experience of young people – however these can also present a series of unique, high-risk challenges to those assuming the duty of care for both the children or young adults attending youth programs, and the adults involved in running them. The need to protect young people, engage in a timely and effective manner with families, activate and work with authorities, protect adults working with young people, understand how to respond effectively to a crisis event, and to protect the organization from litigation and reputational risks is critical. Those directly leading, or who are in support of, youth programs need to understand how to plan and conduct site or field based activities, taking into account the unique risks when dealing with different age groups, genders, cultures and nationalities, and the implications to organizational resilience youth incidents can have. Defining and understanding the role of event and trip team leaders, how to respond to potential youth related incidents, how to brief adult teams and youth on safety and security matters, and how to establish and enforce appropriate codes of conduct for adults and youth alike will build resiliency and confidence with the organization and staff.
